Amidst the success of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," fans are now looking forward to the next installment in the newest "Star Wars" trilogy, "Star Wars: Episode 8." Recently, writer and director Rian Johnson spoke to USA Today to give more updates on the coming film.
Despite numerous mentions that "Star Wars: Episode 8" would be a darker movie compared to "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," Johnson has revealed that he is aiming for the movie to be a funny and enjoyable experience, too.
The writer and director also promised fans that "Star Wars: Episode 8" would delve deeper into the characters of Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). Instead of simply giving the three characters their backstories, the writer also claimed that what he wanted was to show their characters.
Johnson stated, "I wanted to know more about each of them, and that doesn't just mean information or backstory. Figure out what's the most difficult thing each of them could be challenged with now — let's throw that at them and dig into what really makes them tick by seeing how they handle that."
There have also been a lot of speculation regarding Rey's background and her connection to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), and Johnson confirmed that the two characters and their connection with each other will be explored in the film.
Most importantly, the director mentioned that "Star Wars: Episode 8" already has a title, and that the writer had it even during the first draft of the movie, unfortunately, Johnson did not reveal the title. According to MovieWeb, the title would most likely be revealed in around April, during the "Star Wars Celebration" scheduled for that month.
The good news is that there is now less than a year before "Star Wars: Episode 8" is released, and the bad news is that it is still more than 11 months away. "Star Wars: Episode 8" is scheduled to be released on Dec. 15.
