The upcoming augmented reality (AR) game "The Walking Dead: Our World" was officially announced earlier this week, and its gameplay may give a similar vibe as the hit mobile game, "Pokemon GO."

According to a report from Gamespot, Finnish game developer Next Games announced that the game will make use of Google Maps to provide the players the most updated and accurate locations possible. "With Google Maps, we can count on providing the most up-to-date location data," said Next Games CEO Teemu Huuhtanen. This means that when developments in certain areas on the map are on-going, the app will be able to show it.

Moreover, the Next Games boss noted that having Google Maps incorporated into the game brings "unrivaled amount of location data, covering world-famous landmarks, businesses and buildings, such as the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, the London Eye, Burj Khalifa and India Gate, makes exploring your surroundings a breathtaking experience."

"FIGHT walkers in real-world AR environments based on your location. EXPLORE the world around you, find walkers, clear your surroundings and leave your mark on the map for other players to find. COLLECT legendary characters, weapons and items from AMC's The Walking Dead," read the game's official description.

Next Games also released an announcement trailer showing a glimpse of the gameplay, which, like "Pokemon GO," will be a first-person setup. Players will get to carry different weapons like hand guns, sniper rifles, and swords for some melee action against a horde of zombies. Furthermore, the trailer also confirmed some of the playable characters led by Rick, Daryl, and Michonne.

"The Walking Dead: Our World" game is now open for pre-registrations at the game's official website. Meanwhile, Google Maps APIs product manager Clementine Jacoby told VR Focus that it took them the last decade to develop a comprehensive map featuring the real world. Jacoby also expressed his excitement on partnering with companies like Next Games to leverage their data "to build rich experiences for their users to enjoy."

"The Walking Dead: Our World" is slated for to release on Android and iOS within the second quarter of 2018.
